ABOUT CAPTAINS COTTAGE

Nestled within Hobart’s inner residential area, Captains Cottage is easy walking distance to the Hobart CBD, Salamanca and Battery Point, and has everything to make your stay a comfortable one. The surrounding area is filled with popular cafes which are perfect to get your daily coffee fix, Hobart’s hottest restaurants and talented chefs, craft breweries for the beer lovers, intimate bars, and local larders to sample the best Tasmanian produce.

Heritage listed Captains Cottage was originally built for a ship’s captain in the 1800s. The land title was first granted in 1826, however, there is uncertainty about exactly when the cottage was built, with estimates of its age ranging from 1830 to 1870. Over the years considered improvements have been made as we slowly and intentionally make her a little more perfect.

We are passionate about being the best we can and recently installed a deep claw foot bath for long luxurious soaking, with views through French doors to our courtyard garden.

Guests have exclusive use of the cottage, courtyard garden and off street parking. With a mix of natural-textured fabrics and furnishings the cottage is warm and inviting.

We have high speed internet access and free netflix. The loft bedroom has a queen size bed with luxury Dutch flax linen sheets. If you love to cook, we have a fully equipped kitchen with everything you need to make the most of the fresh local produce.

We bought this treasured cottage sight unseen and just knew she was special. We stay here every chance we get and are always a little sad to leave, however, it give us great joy to share her with our beautiful guests who look after her when we can’t.

We believe that the soul of Captains Cottage has come from the intention with which we have created her for you and we hope you fall in love with her as we have.

It’s sometime in the mid-1800s and The Captain has momentarily returned from months at sea. The weather is cool outside – the roses covered in dewdrops – but in these walls, he’s never felt so warm. The sea remains close, as he is reminded by the echo of calling gulls. He sits up from bed and looks out the window, giving a soaring view of the city’s rooftops. He sighs a long expression of respite; it’s time to drop anchor at home, if just for a moment.

As the cool breeze settles and the sky turns a delicate shade of pink, somewhere between dusk and twilight, venture down to the city to mix with the Hobart locals. Menus across the city alter with the seasons, celebrating local ingredients and the community that produces them. Connoisseurs of wine will rejoice in Hobart’s cool-climate offerings. But, for all tastebuds, Hobart’s provisions are sure to please.

Soak up the nautical activity and salty sea air along the waterfront, where you’ll discover traces of Hobart’s seafaring heritage. The ghostly sounds of the breeze gently moving through rigging is the quintessential harbour atmosphere. Fringed by wilderness, Hobart is a city like none other on the mainland. A juxtaposition of elegant Georgian sandstone architecture standing at the foot of Kunanyi / Mount Wellington’s souring presence.

Hobart offers world-class attractions with a vibrant culture in a setting of remarkable beauty. Let yourself be swept away and fall in love with the many charms of this quietly buzzing city.
